About ACE

ACE Bakery recognizes that the road to sustainability must incorporate environmental, economic and social welfare. We also recognize that the initiatives below are only the first stages of our commitment to continuous improvement.

Environmental Sustainability

Reducing the environmental impact of our processes and products is an ongoing focus at ACE Bakery.

Paper: Since early 2012, we have been converting to paper bags that come from 100% FSC certified forests and use water-based inks. FSC certification guarantees that the paper comes from healthy forests and strong communities. FSC forests provide clean water, purify the air, maintain biodiversity, provide habitat for species and play a central role in reducing the impacts of climate change.

Overview of FSC Principles and Criteria

Principle 1. Compliance with all applicable laws and international treaties.

Principle 2. Demonstrated and uncontested, clearly defined, long-term land tenure and use rights.

Principle 3. Recognition and respect of indigenous peoples’ rights.

Principle 4. Maintenance or enhancement of long-term social and economic well-being of forest workers and local communities and respect of worker’s rights in compliance with International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions.

Principle 5. Equitable use and sharing of benefits derived from the forest.

Principle 6. Reduction of environmental impact of logging activities and maintenance of the ecological functions and integrity of the forest.

Principle 7. Appropriate and continuously updated management plan.

Principle 8. Appropriate monitoring and assessment activities to assess the condition of the forest, management activities, and their social and environmental impacts.

Principle 9. Maintenance of High Conservation Value Forests (HCVFs) defined as environmental and social values that are considered to be of outstanding significance or critical importance.

Principle 10. In addition to compliance with all of the above, plantations must contribute to reduce the pressures on and promote the restoration and conservation of natural forests.

Corrugate: The corrugated boxes used for shipping ACE Bakery products are made from 100% recycled content.

Recyclability: All packaging materials are recyclable where facilities exist. Please note that this does not mean that they are definitely recyclable in your area. Please check with your local recycling facilities.

  • As ACE Bakery grows across North America, we are pursuing ways to produce our breads closer to where our customers live and thereby reducing our need to ship products over long distances. A new bakery will open in the fall of 2012 in South Carolina.
  • We operate a production waste program to ensure that all suitable process waste is transferred to converters for animal feed production.
  • Energy efficiency in our facilities is above industry norms (95%). Our Thermoil baking technology systems reduce heat loss and maximize energy conservation.
  • We participate in the Industrial Water Rate Initiative and the Sewer Surcharge Rebate Program organized by the City of Toronto to address the sustainable and efficient use of water resources.
  • We recycle and divert all fine paper, corrugated materials and food waste from landfills.
  • Our office operating procedures include direction on paper and electricity conservation.

Economic Sustainability

For an organization to be sustainable, it must be economically sound as well as environmentally and socially responsible. Our goals are to provide a fair return to our owners, grow our business in a responsible manner, use our operational resources in the most efficient manner, provide good jobs to our employees, be good corporate citizens in the communities we work in, and treat our suppliers with respect.

Social Sustainability

One of ACE Bakery’s founding principles is that businesses have a social responsibility to support the communities that support them. In addition to bread donations, we fund charities in the main centres where ACE Bakery breads are sold.

We also believe that we have a responsibility to support the people who work at ACE Bakery. We endeavour to provide good jobs with long-term growth and career potential.
